Open Path University: Building an Art School Without Walls

For the past several weeks, I have been designing my own Creative Studies Associate program through Open Path University. The idea was simple: take advantage of the incredible amount of free educational material available online and build a structured, meaningful path toward artistic growth.

The first version of the program was a valuable experiment, but it wasn't quite the education I was looking for.

Much of the original curriculum focused on corporate creativity, innovation, and the ways businesses use creative thinking to solve problems. There is tremendous value in that kind of study, and for artists interested in leadership, entrepreneurship, or creative management, it may be exactly the right path.

But I wanted something different.

I wanted the experience of walking through an art school doorway.

So I went back to the drawing board and redesigned the entire CSAA curriculum with the help of artificial intelligence as a research and planning tool. The new curriculum focuses on the areas I feel are essential to becoming a well-rounded artist: observational drawing, digital painting, sketchbook practice, creative writing, storytelling, mythology, art history, and developing a personal creative voice.

One of the most exciting parts of this experiment is that it is completely customizable.

Open Path University is not about creating one perfect degree that everyone should follow. It is about proving that modern learners can use the vast library of free courses available online, combined with an AI assistant of their choosing, to build an education that reflects their own goals.

Want to study illustration? Build a curriculum around illustration.

Want to write novels? Ask your AI to help you find classes in creative writing, literature, and story structure.

Interested in animation, photography, sculpture, design, or another creative field? There are resources waiting for you.

The goal is not to copy my path. The goal is to discover your own.

Starting next week, I will begin documenting my journey through the Creative Studies Associate program in real time. Each week, I will share what I studied, what I created, what challenged me, and what I discovered along the way.

The full CSAA curriculum can be found here.

If you would like to study alongside me with the complete week-by-week schedule, access classroom-style resources, and join our community Discord, you can support Open Path University through Patreon for just $1 per month.

Whether you join the community or simply follow along from afar, I hope this project proves that education does not have to be confined to a traditional classroom. Curiosity, creativity, and the willingness to learn can build a university anywhere.

Welcome to Open Path University. The first semester begins next week.
